Young leaders with a passion for driving change and making an impact are encouraged to answer the call to serve on Tobago Youth Assembly (TYA). The TYA aims to expose young persons to training and experience at all levels of governance and policy development. The programme stands to effectively establish a youth voice in the island’s legislative process. Youth aged 15-18 years are invited to apply. Participants will embark on an enriching journey of personal and professional growth, while contributing to Tobago’s development. The deadline for applications are July 31st 2020.
Suitable applicants will go through a public electoral process following which, successful candidates will be trained to effectively fulfill the roles of Youth Assemblymen and Councillors. Other available positions include: Presiding Officer, Clerk of the Assembly and Research Officer. The elected Youth Assembly will run for one (1) year and is intended to reflect the current composition of the Tobago House of Assembly.
This programme is a collaboration between the Division of Sport and Youth Affairs (DSYA), the Assembly Legislature and the Tobago Youth Council (TYC).
Director of Youth Development, Ann Marie deGazon, indicated that the programme stands to benefit youth in a number of ways. She says, “Our youth sometimes lose their voice in the general scheme of things that significantly affect them and their future. This programme will provide the opportunity for young persons to not only learn, but to actively participate in governance systems and policy decision making mechanisms in Tobago.”
