Aqua Warriors start season in Golden Fashion

The Tobago YMCA Aqua Warriors recently concluded their first national swimming championship of the season returning with six gold medals and two bronze medals.

The ASATT National Age Group Long Course Championships which was held from 12th – 16th February 2020 at the National Aquatic Centre in Balmain, Couva was a CARIFTA, CCCAN and an Olympic Qualifying event. The Aqua Warriors contingent for the championships comprised of National swimmers Ornella Walker and Jacob Cox with their teammate John Procope all under the tutelage of newly appointed National Head Coach Mosi Denoon.

Ornella Walker, in the Women 18 & Over age category, claimed a total of five medals at this national championship and an overall 1st place high-point trophy in the Women 18 & over age category. Walker claimed Gold in the 200-meter Backstroke, 100-meter Backstroke, 50-meter Backstroke, 100-meter Freestyle and a Bronze in the 50-meter Freestyle event.

Jacob Cox, in the Boys 11-12 age category, claimed three medals at the national championships. Cox claimed Gold in the 200-meter Breaststroke & 100-meter Breaststroke event and a Bronze in the 50meter Breaststroke event.

Honourable mention must be given to John Procope, though not medalling, fought valiantly at the championships and qualified for the Pan American Masters Swimming Championships which heads to Colombia this coming June. Procope placed 5th in the 200-meter Individual Medley event, 6th in the 50meter Breaststroke event and 8th in the 50-Meter Butterfly event.
