The Division of Sport and Affairs (DSYA) was pleased to host one of the island’s youth stakeholders, the Rotaract Club of Tobago, during their Tablet Distribution Ceremony on Wednesday February 24, 2021. The ceremony, which took place at the DSYA Conference Room, saw seven families receive tablets to provide their youth with much-needed access to online learning.
The Division’s Youth Development Director, Ann Marie deGazon, congratulated the Rotaract Club on the initiative, while encouraging more parents and families to reach out to organisations during these unprecedented times. She also gave words of advice to those present and challenged them to keep motivating their youth. She explained, “It’s up to you the parents to be a positive guiding force for your children. Things may be difficult at times but with your support, anything is possible. We at the Division, and by extension the Department of Youth, stand ready to assist on this journey through the resources we have available.”
Following the distribution, recipient Monique Smart-Charles shared, “I am indeed delighted that my son was selected as a recipient for this initiative. I was not able to afford a device for my son, so he has been using a phone to access online classes. He has been struggling with that for some time now, so I was very happy when I received a call informing me that a device would be donated to him.”
Meanwhile, President of the Rotaract Club of Tobago Reon Lyons highlighted, “The Rotaract Club conducted annual Back to School projects in the past however, due to the urgent need for devices as a result the Covid-19 pandemic, we enhanced the project by donating tablets along with the regular school supplies. I feel great knowing that we can provide something so substantial to parents during this difficult time.” Lyons added that going forward the club will also provide technical support to parents on the use of the tablets where required.
