Young people between the ages of 12-17 are invited to take advantage of the opportunity to be part of the Tobago Youth Assembly (TYA) election by registering to vote online at www.thasportandyouth.com with a parent/guardian’s permission. Registration takes place from October 6th – October 23rd. Registered youth will also gain access to specialised services, technical support, referrals and other opportunities to build their capacity through the Division of Sport and Youth Affairs (DSYA).

The initiative aims to mirror components of the Tobago House of Assembly. The TYA is a programme designed to expose young people on the island to matters of governance and policy-making, thereby giving them the tools to not only create better lives for themselves, but also be agents of change. Following a campaign drive, voters will select the candidates of their choice to represent them in various districts as Assemblymen within the Youth Assembly. This initiative represents partnership between DSYA and the Assembly Legislature, in collaboration with the Tobago Youth Council.

Chairman of the Tobago Youth Assembly Steering Committee and Youth Programme Coordinator at DSYA, Julien Skeete shared, “As a voter in the TYA election, young people will be able to experience democracy in a way they haven’t been able to before. It is for this reason that a decision was taken to have the electorate be comprised of youth 12-17.” The election is set to take place online on a date to be announced. The elected Youth Assembly and Secretariat members will serve for a period of one year.
