JOB DESCRIPTION

Youth Development Officer I

 

JOB SUMMARY

The Youth Development Officer I will be required to encourage and promote youth activities in an assigned area. Duties involve encouraging youths to organise themselves into formal groups, advising and assisting them in their activities and promoting participation in inter-group activities in their area. Work is often performed on evening and on holidays. The employee exercises considerable initiative and judgment within the framework of the established policy of their department, and his work is reviewed by a superior through discussions and reports.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Youth Development Officer I shall be required to carry out the following main duties under the guidance of their supervisor, in the Division of Education, Youth Affairs and Sport:

  • Encourages the formation of youth groups by visiting districts, calling meetings of unattached youths, urging them to organise themselves into formal groups and advising them how to carry out their activities.
  • Attends meetings of youth groups, advises them on the proper procedures of conducting their meetings and other activities and assists them in planning their activities and making maximum use of facilities in their areas.
  • Encourages activities between the various youth groups in area, assisting in the formulation and implementation of the programmes or projects.
  • Liaises with organisations, groups or individuals interested in youth development to encourage sponsorship or involvement in youth activities in the area.
  • Organises and participates in training courses in youth leadership and delivers lectures to youth groups on the principle and techniques of leadership and group administration.
  • Attends functions organised by youth groups as representative of the Community Development Division.
  • Interviews and assesses applicants for youth camps and makes recommendation.
  • Makes reports to a superior regarding inspections, visits meetings with your groups and the problems encountered.
  • Advises Youth Groups in the solution of their problems and/makes representations on their behalf to private organisation, individuals or other government departments.
  • Performs relation work as may be required.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of adult education and youth leadership method practice and techniques
  • Some knowledge of sociology and social psychology
  • Ability to organise activities suitable for youths and to communicate with youths effectively.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly, concisely and effectively.
  • Ability to promote co-operation amongst the young members of a community and to foster their pride and interest in the community.

 

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

  • Experience in youth development, social work and/or community development. Training as evidenced by a Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences or any equivalent combination of experience and training.

 

  • Knowledge of adult education and youth leadership method practice and techniques
  • Some knowledge of sociology and social psychology
  • Ability to organise activities suitable for youths and to communicate with youths effectively.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly, concisely and effectively.
  • Ability to promote co-operation amongst the young members of a community and to foster their pride and interest in the community.

JOB  DESCRIPTION

Youth Auxiliary

JOB SUMMARY

The Youth Auxiliary will be required to encourage and promote youth activities in an assigned area.  Duties involve encouraging youths to organize themselves into formal groups, and assisting them in their activities and promoting participation in inter-group activities in their area.  Work is often performed on evenings and on holidays.

DUTIES  AND  RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Attending the meeting of Youth Groups and assisting in the development of youth programme and projects.
  • Coordinating the training of Youth Groups within a specified district.
  • Facilitating the coordination of programmes for youth within the community.
  • Encouraging the participation and involvement of young people.
  • Monitoring youth programmes and projects.
  • Preparing relevant reports for submission to the Youth Development Officer I.
  • Assisting in the formation of youth groups.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Sound interpersonal skills

MINIMUM  EXPERIENCE  AND  TRAINING

  • Experience in youth development, social work and/or community development Training as evidenced by a General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level or its equivalent, with passes in five (5) subjects, two of which must be English Language and Mathematics.
